What is True2U?

True2U Logo with TaglineThe True2U program is an innovative mentoring and career awareness program that prepares eighth grade students for the transition from middle school to high school. It began at the start of the 2015-2016 school year and served 807 youth with 150 mentors in Cleveland during its first year. The program’s goal is to serve 2,500 students in 68 schools by the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.

Developmentally, eighth grade students are exploring issues of personal identity and discovering their unique interests, attributes and skills. Educationally, they are preparing to select from a portfolio of specialized high schools that will set them on the path to post-secondary education and a career of their choice.

Research shows that students are at highest risk of dropping out of school between the eighth and tenth grades. True2U is positioned to mobilize an extensive caring network of school and community resources to help youth acknowledge their strengths, develop personal and career goals, preserve innate optimism, and stay on the path to graduation and a fulfilling future.

How Will True2U Work?

Mentoring will be delivered using a unique advisory model in which groups of 10 students are led by a team of two mentors and supported by a Cleveland Metropolitan School District teacher.  The advisory groups meet at the schools for three hours each month and follow a structured curriculum that helps students think about career options and how they can use high school as a pathway to their future.  Students are supported in creating their own personal success guide mapping what they want to do with their lives.

What is the Curriculum?

True2U uses a blended personal development curriculum coupled with a career exploration curriculum combining elements from two key sources: 1) Naviance, a comprehensive, career and college readiness software package and 2) Teens Can Make It Happen: Nine Steps to Success, a goal-setting and personal responsibility curriculum developed by entrepreneur and author Stedman Graham. The curriculum will also integrate materials from the Humanware Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework, currently a part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District curriculum; “Cleveland Goes to College” – an initiative that helps students understand and navigate the college admission process; the OhioMeansJobs online career exploration materials and the Ohio Department’s Social and Emotional Learning Framework.
